The Worlds Largest Privately Owned Yacht - Octopus

In 2003, the launch of Paul Allen's 127m (416ft) "Octopus" secured its number one position as the world's largest yacht.

Microsoft's "accidental billionaire" Paul Allen - worth US$20 billion according to Forbes, the third richest man in America and 7th in the world - owns two other monster yachts such as Tatoosh ranked 3rd in the world in 2003. Octopus is currently the world's eighth largest superyacht.

Octopus cost Allen over US$200 million and has Permanent crew of 60, including several former Navy Seals.

It has two helicopters, seven boats, a 10 man submarine and a remote controlled vehicle for crawling on the Ocean floor. The submarine has the capacity to sleep eight for up to two weeks underwater.

On average, owners must spend a minimum of 10 percent of the purchase price every year to keep these yachts in good working condition and cover crew salaries. Therefore “Octopus” which cost Allen US$200 million requires a US$20 million annual budget.

Wow that is vast! Where is it normally docked? Amazing!

Went to Monte Carlo last year and saw boats with this look, but not quite as massive!

That's not a yacht... it's a country for heaven sakes...

Given the size of his yacht, we can assume Paul Allen has a very small penis.

Maybe that's where they got the name Microsoft.

While living in New Orleans during 2003 this yacht was docked in front of the river walk mall. I was with my 8 year old on a field trip and we were on a boat in the river and I took pictures of this yacht with the river walk mall and New Orleans building in the background. Didn't even know what whose yacht it was, I just knew it was huge. It was docked in the same spot as the Carnival Cruise ships ( they were out at sea ) WOW big yacht....

Yes, Octopus is in Juneau, Alaska. The helicopter landed on the aft deck in front of our house. Was the boat successful in navigating the NW Passage? Raining and storming here. Too bad Paul Allen can't buy sunshine.

20 million dollars spent a year for upkeep and salaries. It's sad to think how much good that money could do for the world, but instead is being spent on one man's ridiculously huge overcompensation.

Sitting in the bay here in Kailua-Kona (Big Island, Hawaii), for real right now (November 25 2012). Just waited on the crew for dinner at my restaurant job. Fun bunch; definitely into their dinner and drinks (they probably don't see dry land nor a night off very often..?). They mentioned that crew size is actually "80". The ship is massive, as seen from here beach-side. Sticks out like a sore yet elegant thumb in our little traditional Hawaianna village.. Kinda surreal actually, to have it parked here lately. Buzz buzz for some...
