Mass Panic at German Music Festival

At least 19 people have been killed and 80 injured in a stampede at the famed Love Parade techno music festival in the German city of Duisburg. The annual event is meant to celebrate music, love and peace.

The deaths and injuries occured when panic broke out among huge crowds in a roughly 600 meter long tunnel leading towards the day-long open air Love Parade festival in the German city of Duisburg.

The festival, which police said drew about 1.4 million people, was not immediately cancelled because authorities feared an abrupt halt could spark a second panic.

Music blared out after the stampede and people danced on, unaware of the unfolding tragedy nearby. Organisers finally called the event off in late evening hours after the deaths.

I come from germany and I was shocked when I heard about it, especially because my brother was there.

But now that we know the facts, it's obvious something like that would happen.

- Normaly, it's a parade (Love Parade), but this time, it was on a fixed location, which was allocated for a maximum of 500.000 people. There were 1.200.000 people

- The tunnel was entrance and exit at the same time, with no seperation. It was also the only entrance/exit for the whole festival. Some say there was another entrance/exit, but it wasn't used much, aparently.

- I saw an interview with a guy who wanted to leave and was in the tunnel when the panic broke out. He got lucky and was pushed back from where he came by the mass of people. He ran to a police officer and told him to stop the people from pushing, kicking and running over the stumbled people. The officer just said "You want to organize that?". Unbelievable...

- Shortly after the panic a wide area arround the party location was shut down, barricades everywhere, the train station was shut down, nobody was able to leave...

- A few days before, local people from Duisburg postet on the internet, that there will be dead people. They knew that the location would inadequate for such an event. Nobody listened
